Star Wars™ Costume Ideas

There have now been so many Star Wars™ films that I have officially lost count.  I do remember some of the good guys and the bad guys though, and I’ve tried to include a few of each here.  So, you can find Han Solo and Boba Fett on the same page — when was the last time THAT happened? We’ve also included both the traditional Star Wars™ Storm Trooper costume as well as the newer version Clone Trooper. Depends on whether you prefer the original Star Wars™ or the sequels or prequels

ARF (Advanced Recon Force) troopers were specialized clone troopers that carried out short-range reconnaissance for Jedi Generals and clone commanders. They were introduced in the Star Wars: Clone Wars movie

In terms of equipment, ARF troopers were often provided with DC-15A blaster rifles, DC-15Ss, chain guns, and missile launchers along with thermal detonators. They wore also a light weight recon armor made of plastoid material as well as surveillance gear. Their helmet had an infrared camera so that they could operate in dark places as well as recognizing friends or foes. They often carried a backpack with some basic items, such as survival rations, C.S.E.L. (Combat Survivor Evader Locator) and explosives, but it was possible to have a rope, a macrobinocular, ice-axe and a first-aid-kit/ They would often wear armor that fit the environment of the planet they were on.

Before the introduction of the AT-RT drivers, ARF troopers would often be pressed into service in that capacity.

You can see ALL ARF costumes here.

Rey is a human female scavenger from Star Wars: The Force Awakens who conducted her trade on the world of Jakku approximately thirty years after the Battle of Endor.

She dresses in tan, ragged clothes, including a scarf around her head and a visor—once part of a stormtrooper’s helmet—covered with sand. She owned a landspeeder which she relied on for quick transportation.

She’s completely self-sufficient and does everything for herself, until she meets another character and an adventure begins.

Our hero! A Jedi Knight in “The Force”! Jedi Commander! Trained at the feet of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Sigh.  Well, until that little fall to the dark side, when he became Darth Vader. Don’t you hate it when that happens? Of course, they brought him back to the light side right before he kicked the final bucket.

At the beginning of the story Anakin Skywalker was a Force-sensitive Human male who served the Galactic Republic as a Jedi Knight and later served the Galactic Empire as the Sith Lord Darth Vader.

In the beginning of the story Anakin was born to the slave Shmi Skywalker in 41.9 BBY, Anakin was conceived by midi-chlorians, the symbiotic organisms that allowed individuals to touch the Force, and he and his mother were brought to the desert planet of Tatooine to be the slaves of Gardulla the Hutt.

They soon ended up as the property of the Toydarian Watto, and Skywalker exhibited exceptional piloting skills and a reputation for being able to build and repair anything even at a young age.

In 32 BBY, Skywalker encountered the Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Padmé Amidala, and he helped them secure the parts they needed for their starship by winning the Boonta Eve Classic podracing event—only to learn that he had also won his freedom in doing so.

Like most of the Star Wars gang, this character has a very cool name.  But not a cool occupation.  He’s a no-good-nik bounty hunter.  He was supposedly the last of the Mandalorians, a tribe of ancient conquerors, who crafted the nearly indestructible suit of armer “the Fett” wore.

Boba Fett was a Mandalorian warrior and bounty hunter. He was the only unaltered clone of the famed Jango Fett, created as unit A0050, one of the first of many Fett replicas designed to become part of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was raised as Jango’s son.

Jango taught Boba much, training him to become a skilled bounty hunter as was his father-figure before him. Jango was killed at the Battle of Geonosis, which opened the Clone Wars. Just a boy, Boba was forced to grow up and took to traveling the galaxy. Later, he became a bounty hunter and took assignments from beings such as Jabba the Hutt, and achieved notoriety despite his young age.

Clone Trooper

Me, I like the traditional Storm Troopers costumes, but hey…you’ve gotta keep up with the times, and this is the latest Star Wars™ “Trooper” costume.

Clone troopers were an army of identical, genetically-modified clones, created to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic during the full-scale intergalactic conflict that came to be known as the Clone Wars.

Grown at an accelerated rate and raised in the laboratories and facilities of Kamino, the clone troopers were trained throughout the first ten years of their lives to become one of the most efficient military forces in galactic history. Bred for the sole purpose of combat, the clones were indoctrinated with unwavering obedience to the Galactic Republic and—more specifically—their Commander-in-Chief, the Supreme Chancellor.

Makes me chuckle when I think of the comment that one of the Ace of Cakes guy, Duff Goldman, made about this — he called it a thong helmet. Hee hee.

Classic Star Wars Costumes

Han Solo

We  first met Han Solo, that lovable rapscallion smuggler, in the original Star Wars film, where he and his co-pilot, Chewbacca, agree to transport Princese Leia, Luke Skywalker and the gang to the Rebel Alliance planet.  His character continues on through the “Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” sequels and is returning in “The Force Awakens.”  Gotta love that rascal.

Han Solo was a Human smuggler from the manufacturing planet Corellia who achieved galactic fame as a member of the Rebel Alliance and later the New Republic.

Born on Corellia, he was orphaned at an early age and taken by the pirate Garris Shrike to serve on his crew. He was treated cruelly, and served Shrike for many years before escaping while in his teens. Solo became a smuggler, and fell in love with Bria Tharen, though she left him due to her duties to the Rebel Alliance.

Solo then entered the Imperial Academy at Carida, serving with distinction. He was kicked out, however, when he stopped an Imperial officer from beating a Wookiee named Chewbacca for resisting capture. In gratitude, the Wookiee swore a life debt to Solo, protecting him with his life. He became a smuggler once again, with Chewbacca at his side. Piloting the upgraded and customized Millennium Falcon, which he won in a game of Sabacc against Lando Calrissian, his future ally, he became known as one of the best smugglers in the galaxy.

On the run from Imperial officials, Solo became caught up with the Rebel Alliance, courtesy of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa, whom he helped rescue from the Death Star. Solo helped Skywalker destroy the Death Star when it attacked the Rebel base at Yavin 4, where they had taken Organa. Solo became an unofficial member of the Rebel Alliance, and fell in love with Organa.

Princess Leia (Organa)

Our heroine in the Star Wars Trilogy.  Although she’s always called by the abbreviated version, her real whole name is Princess Leia Organa, and unlike her layabout brother, Luke, she spent her formative years on the planet Alderaan, becoming their youngest Senator and eventual leader in the Rebel Alliance.

Leia Organa Solo (born Leia Amidala Skywalker) was, at various stages of her life, a politician, revolutionary, and Jedi Knight of the New Jedi Order.

The daughter of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo, Leia was the younger twin sister of Luke Skywalker, and, shortly after her birth, she became the adopted daughter of Bail Organa and Queen Breha of Alderaan, making her a Princess of Alderaan.

She had a forceful personality and bright intellect, having accomplished much in her youth: she was a strong proponent for the Rebel Alliance, the youngest Senator ever of the Galactic Empire at eighteen standard years of age, and a member of the Royal Family of Alderaan. Years later, she was instrumental in the creation of the New Republic, and was elected to the position of Chief of State, serving twice in that office.

She develops one of those love/hate relationships with Han Solo, until they finally declare their love for each other.  Of course, that doesn’t work out so well when the Dark Lord freezes Han in carbonite and hands him over to Bobo Fett, the uberbad bounty hunter, who turns him over the the zaftig Jabba the Hutt.  Geez, true love never does run smoothly, eh? But all ends well as they get together, have kids, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Chewy. Who doesn’t love this guy? What’s not to love about a smelly, matted-haired killing machine? Well in all fairness, Chewy only kills people who are trying to kill him…or his buds Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. Still, if you ever saw the Werewolf movies, Chewbacca is not someone I’d want to run into in a dark alley.

Chewbacca (or “Chewie”, as he was known by his friends) was a legendary Wookiee from Kashyyyk and co-pilot of Han Solo’s ship, the Millennium Falcon. He was considered a hero of the Rebel Alliance and played a role in key victories against the Galactic Empire.

He was the son of Attichitcuk, the husband of Mallatobuck, and the father of Lumpawaroo. Chewbacca carried with him the name of an ancient Wookiee hero, the great Bacca, first of the great chieftains of Kashyyyk, and the creator of a sword that denoted leadership among the Wookiees. This name placed Chewbacca in a noble lineage, which was further supported by his role in the Battle of Kashyyyk during the Clone Wars and during the Galactic Civil War.

Luke Skywalker

Luke is the central character in the first “Star Wars” film, and becomes a reluctant hero and student of Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Unknown to him, he is the twin sister of Princess Leia — the central female character. Coincidence? We don’t think so.

Luke grows up on this horrible desert planet, but things get more interesting when he finds two droids — cute little R2-D2 and C-3PO (who for some reason has a British accent, although there is probably an explanation for that that I missed).

Wise, cute, wrinkled little Yoda.  Still, if I hear the phrase “Do or do not. There is no try.” one more time I’m going to scream.  And not in a root-for-the-home-team good kind of way.

Yoda was one of the most renowned and powerful Jedi Masters in galactic history. He was known for his legendary wisdom, mastery of the Force and skills in lightsaber combat.

Standing at about 2 feet tall (66 cm)l, Yoda was a male member of a mysterious species, details of which he did not reveal. Yoda served as a member of the Jedi Order for centuries, eventually gaining a seat on the Jedi High Council, before reigning as the Grand Master of the Jedi. He had exceptional skills in lightsaber combat, most commonly employing whirling and acrobatic Form IV techniques.

Though arguably the Order’s greatest master of the Force and most skilled warrior, Yoda believed most firmly in the importance of instructing younger generations and never missed an opportunity to ensure his students learn from their experiences. At heart, the diminutive Jedi Master was a teacher; indeed, he instructed nearly all the Jedi in the order, to some extent, during his reign as Grand Master.

Darth Vader

Darth Vader is the ultimate bad guy. But he didn’t start out that way. He began life as Anakin Skywalker (see above) and turned to “the dark side” in his teens.

In the original episode, he task was to regain the stolen plans for the Death Star and destroy the Rebel Alliance base.  That didn’t work out so well for him, although he manages to stay alive through another couple of sequels until he meets his unfortunate end saving his son, Luke Skywalker’s, life.  Very sad.  But still…that face.  Keep the mask on, Bubba.

This costume comes in many sizes and you can also scoop up some of the cool accessories while you’re there.

Storm Trooper

Stormtroopers were the elite soldiers of the Galactic Empire.

Like Imperial-class Star Destroyers and TIE fighters, stormtroopers served as ever present reminders of the absolute power of Emperor Palpatine.

These faceless enforcers of the New Order were considered an extension of the Emperor’s will, and thus they often used efficient yet usually unreasonable tactics as a way to keep thousands of star systems throughout the galaxy in line.

At the height of the Empire, stormtroopers had effectively become symbols of major authority. With few exceptions, they were distinguished from all other military units by their signature white armor.

Thought we’d close it out on a positive note with …

Obi-Wan Kenobi

(Including children’s sizes and varieties)
Obi-Wan Kenobi, later known as Ben Kenobi during his exile, was a legendary Jedi Master who played a significant role in the fate of the galaxy during the waning days of the Galactic Republic. He was the mentor of both Anakin and Luke Skywalker, training both in the ways of the Force. He had a long and tumultuous career that helped shape the fate of the entire galaxy.

Kenobi became the first Jedi in approximately 1,000 years to defeat a Sith Lord in combat when he defeated Darth Maul during the Battle of Naboo.

Kenobi fought during many battles of the Clone Wars, and was one of the last members of the Jedi High Council. Even after his apprentice became a Jedi Knight, Kenobi and Skywalker fought together many times, becoming a widely renowned pair.

Good to know that these are all officially licensed STAR WARS™ costumes.
